Online Advertising Soon Mounts Up

If you have ever done any advertising on the internet before, you will know the common phenomenon of advertising costs "creeping up" on you. When you first start out, you will no doubt choose a relatively moderate click rate - such as $0.15 or so. On the surface of things, this seems like an appropriate amount to bid, and will more often than not place your ad 3rd or 4th in the sponsored search results.

The number of impressions you receive will be moderate, and of course you will probably alter the daily budget, and PPC amount every so often to replicate the optimum advertising strategy. Unfortunately, this is where the costs soon mount up. With the large search engines, the minimum daily budget is around $5, meaning that unless you turn your campaign off half way through the day, you will be charged a whopping $5 per day for any running campaigns.

This seems like "not much" on first glance, however when you count up the days, you will soon see that the minimum you need per month for your advertising activities is $150. For the average person with an average website - that is a lot of money. And what's worst, is that this amount it the bare minimum!

Imagine if you have a site which is targeting a keyword with a high bid per click amount. To give you an example, casino and gambling related sites can attract a bid price of $10 per click! That's twice the limit for your daily budget if you set it at $5.

Diversifying Your Advertising

This is only the start of the equation. Remember, the top search engines compete against each other, meaning that advertising you do on one site will not follow through to another site. If this is the case, it means that you are only able to advertise on Google ($5 per day) separately from Yahoo (another $5 per day). Therefore, even if you want to advertise on the two main search sites only - you are up for $300 or so per month.

For most people, this is completely unaffordable - yet it is the only way that they know of to spread the word about their product or site. Unless this money is being earned back in advertising revenue, it really is a bit of a waste isn't it.
